I'd like to take a few lines and offer my sincerest apologies. It's not you, it's me. I've been so distracted with meaningless things that I've lost track of what's most important to me. It's you blogosphere, it's you. Sure, I've been working like a madman (Get it? Hey-oh!), I've been writing more for fantasy football, and I've been listening to waaaayyy more Dave South than I ever cared to. But I know where my priorities should be, so let's get them straight, shall we? Yes, we shalst.
Sincerely, Stewart Wade
Well, that was fun. And hilarious! But I know you, my loyal readers, are wanting more than just words. You want action, and I'm here to give it to you in the form of a good, solid Wade family update. There's much to discuss, so let's get to it.
First, Wadesy Baby. Last time we talked, Wadesy was 90% a boy. A few weeks later, that 90% became 95%. Well, I'd like to finally put this issue to rest. We had our 20-week sonogram, and I can officially announce that Wadesy Baby is a ... GIRL. Nah, just kidding, it's a boy! And he's been moving like crazy lately. I've always been weirded out when I've felt other babies kicking, but I could sit there all day and let Wadesy kick my hand. It's insane.
Anyways, we recently switched doctors, from Dr. Nishio to Dr. Crookes. Not only was Nishio a bit, umm, cold, but she wasn't technically on our insurance. So yeah, I'd rather not pay 50% when I could pay 20%. But we'd actually been thinking about switching regardless, and Dr. Crookes is great. And Irish. So, that's obviously a plus, because any good OB is Irish. But you knew that.
The other good thing about her office is that they do 3D sonograms. So without further ado, why don't we check in with Wadesy...
Is that a little Stewart Wade, because I think it is! He's "perfect" according to Dr. Crookes' partner, and of course, us. That's likely because I haven't begun parenting him yet. Right? Right? I mean, am I right?
Second, how about an update on Gill? Well, she finally graduated from her Nausea! Unfortunately, she then spent a good two weeks in Migraineland, followed by a brief stint in Coldville. Besides that, she's doing great. The only major issue is that she's been extremely camera shy for the past 22 weeks. It's time to put that to an end, right? Drumroll....BAM! Baby bump!
Now that's a fine lookin' mama.
Third, let's talk living situation. We're currently in a lovely one bedroom apartment a block away from the OJ incident. So while it's the perfect location, we're gonna need a nursery pronto. Fortunately, we found a place two blocks away. So don't worry, we'll STILL be only one block from OJ's, just in the other direction. We haven't officially signed a lease yet, but we did give our 30-day notice (more on that in a sec), so we're outta here one way or the other. This new place does have a few quirks, including a stove straight out of the 70's. No, seriously, I think it's 40 years old. It's fascinating. I'll have pictures soon. But "as long as it works, it works" according to our future building manager. Mmmmkay.
So like I said above, we gave our 30-day notice. Well, I guess you could say that didn't sit too well with our current landlords. Apparently they're under the impression that "it's not normal" to leave in the middle of the month, and we have to give our notice on the first of the month. Well, once I pointed out that they were incorrect (via our actual lease and California law), they proceeded to fly off the handle, threatened to take us to small claims court, and let me know that they "expected more" from me than this. Soooo...you're saying this isn't going to end well, aren't you? Mmmmkay.
Fourth, it's my mom's birthday! Happy Birthday Mama K, Momma K, Grammy Wade, etc. I guess we'll nail down that name later.
Fifth, and finally, I'd like to let you all know that October 2010 just might go down as the most chaotic month in the life of Stewart D. Wade. Here's just some of what to expect.
October 4-6: Shooting a TV spot in Atlanta. October 7-10: In Dallas for my 10-year high school reunion. Could high school sweethearts showing up pregnant be more cliche? October 15-16: (Hopefully) move in to our new apartment. October 17-22: Shooting in New York, Jersey, Philly and Connecticut. October 23-30: BABYMOON in Kauai!
I'm exhausted just looking at that. Of course, I'm glad it ends the way it does. Speaking of ending, I think we should. You're tired of reading, I'm tired of writing. Let's just get this over with. Good day to you, blogosphere.
So there we are, watching our new baby twist, squirm and "wave" (or so says Dr. Nishio) at us on the sonogram monitor. We'd fought 405 traffic, months of nausea and hours upon hours of housecleaning, and the moment we, and 26 other Wadesy Baby Bowl participants had been waiting for was finally here. Dr. Nishio zooms in, Gill and I both hear an imaginary drumroll in the distance, and...AND!...nothing. Apparently Wadesy is modest, to quite modest. But we're patient. We zoom, wait, zoom, wait, zoom, zoom, wait, wait, and all of a sudden...penis!
(Jake, please save your "How far did you have to actually zoom in to see it?" jokes for another blog)
All that to say, if you're familiar with the hard and fast rules of human anatomy, that means we're having...drumroll...a BOY!!
Well, we're pretty sure. "90% sure" that is. So while we won't have the official results in for another month, we can all be 90% sure that you'll see more footballs than barbies in the nursery. Of course, if he insists, hopefully he'll choose appropriately. What, still no good?
So we're extremely excited, although we both thought we would be having a girl. In fact, we both thought (independently) that we'd be having a girl on February 2nd who weighed 8 lbs, 2 oz. Crazy how that happened. Crazy wrong. Well, I guess there's still a 10% chance.
And as for the Wadesy Baby Bowl, the 10 people that picked a boy are rejoicing, and the other 16 are crushed. Absolutely crushed. But chin up! There's still two categories left, and while I haven't run the numbers, I'm gonna go out on a small, fragile limb and guess that you might possibly still have an extremely outside chance of winning. That's better than nothing, right? Sure it is.
So after reading 106 days worth of blogs, surely you know by now that there's never a lack of drama in the Wadesy Baby Chronicles. So hypothetically, let's say I was asked to write an article for the LA Times after our doctor visit. I'd probably craft a headline that would read something like "Extreme magnification reveals Wadesy Baby a Boy". Unfortunately, the subhead would read "Medical bills presented, mother of child faints".
Yep, you read that right - the medical bills were presented. Oh sorry, I mean Gilly fainted. For the first time in her life.
But honestly, if you're gonna faint, you'd be hard pressed to pick a better place to do it, as about 4 different nurses sprang into action before she even hit the ground. Sorry, I mean before I lowered her to the ground. I'd never exaggerate solely for entertainment purposes. Never.
Aaaanyways, as soon as she announced she was going to throw up, a trash can was inserted under her nose. Of course, the trash can was storing some discarded Taco Bell, so Gill was throwing up for more than one reason at this point. A few dry heaves later, we got her to her feet, escorted her into an exam room, and even bonded with Dr. Nishio (a rare occurrence) over some pretzels and ice water.
So like we always say on this blog, all's well that ends well, right? Right.
Welp, we've finally reached triple digits here in Babyville, USA. Gill is starting to show (in private), she's gradually* losing her all-day sickness, and our baby is massive. Clenched fist massive.
In other baby-related news, our good friends Karen and BJ Rector welcomed their firstborn on Saturday night - Eleanor Michael. She will be going by E-Mike, or something similar I'm sure. So welcome to this crazy world E-Mike!
In other non-baby-but-equally-important news, my sister (Big Al) turned 26 today! So congrats Al, it's all downhill from here. Actually, it's been going downhill for a while. Sure, you may have convinced yourself that 25 was some sort of "milestone" (if being able to legally rent a car is a "milestone", we need better milestones), but who are we kidding at this point? 26 simply means you're 4 years away from your 30's. On the bright side, you at least get to celebrate that fact ... with gifts! (No, she has not gotten ours yet. And if anyone actually has any ideas for a 26 year-old birthday present, please feel free to leave them in the comments section below.)
Welp, that's all from Babyville. We've got another doctor's appointment on Wednesday, so I'm sure you'll hear from a fist-sized Wadesy in another couple days. Maybe he/she will actually LOOK like a baby now, and hopefully nothing like that gross severed hand above.
*Minus Friday and Sunday, when she threw up at least 10 times.
Well, the time had finally come to make known the existence of Wadesy to my fantasy football league. So in lieu of a full post on the blog, our friends over at ESPN.com have full coverage of The Announcement. Reading the article, written brilliantly by Skip Raines, will go a long way in helping you understand why our baby is wearing a Shriners Potentate Fez in our newest sonogram below.
As for a baby update, we are officially past 11 weeks! The Westside Pregnancy Clinic needed volunteers for a free sonogram to help train one of their nurses, so we got a second one on Saturday (as you saw above). They have a little nicer machine, so we got a better view of Wadesy, and he/she was still kicking, although not quite as much as before. But we're pretty sure we got a smile and wave at the camera.
If you think about it this week, keep praying for Gill's nausea - she's obviously really sick of feeling so crummy all day. But on the bright side, we've really gotten the most out of our Netflix subscription (Gill doesn't find this fact very comforting).
Okay, I think that about covers it. Now it's back to Prison Break, courtesy of Netflix.
Oh, hello there. Stewart here. I'd like to be the first to welcome you to the official blog of the Wades. Since this is an invite-only blog, I'm gonna go ahead and assume you've met everyone. You know, people like Gillean, Stewart, and Lady. And on January 29, 2011 (give or take a few days), you'll get a chance to meet the newest addition, Wadesy Baby! So since this is Day 58, and a lot has already happened, let's take a stroll down memory lane, timeline-style.
Monday, May 24th Gillean is late. And by late, I mean one day late. Not exactly time to start popping the champagne. But of course she takes a test...and it's POSITIVE! Considering last month's events, we're cautiously optimistic at this point, but pretty excited at the same time. Could the Lord really bless us with a child two months in a row?!
Tuesday, June 1st Gillean takes her second trip to Dr. Blank's office. And for the second straight time, Dr. Blank is nowhere to be found. So she sees yet another one of her partners, who takes an official test. But to be honest, this looks like, feels like, and acts exactly like a home pregnancy test. Just costs about 25 times more (thanks insurance!). And the results are in: we're PREGNANT!!
Wednesday, June 9th For two weeks, Gill searched tirelessly for a Gynecologist. Turns out when you live 1,500 miles away from home, it's harder to find a doctor than you'd think. Lesley didn't exactly "love" hers, so we didn't have a recommendation to go off of. But Gill eventually found one who sounded great: Dr. Nishio. So there we are, sitting in the waiting room at 8:00 am, waiting and waiting and waiting. Gill gets called back first, presumably to determine if I'm really the father, and I get the call about five minutes later. When I get to the room, I find Gill lying on a bed with all kinds of medical paper draped over her. And by her bed: the sonogram machine. I can't believe we're about to see...
...our baby! Well, according to Dr. Nishio it's a baby. To me, and the rest of us, it's a small white discoloration within a larger black discoloration. But then she zooms in, and we see it: the heartbeat. And then we HEAR it. We're too awe-struck to even say anything. It has to be one of the Top 5 moments in my life.
In fact, here they are, in chronological order: 1. Sixth grade church lock-in (C'mon, receiving eternal grace has to be #1) 2. Sitting next to Gillean Pearson at "You've Got Mail" - Of course, I didn't exactly realize the importance of it at the time 3. Our wedding day 4. Our wedding night ... booya! 5. Hearing my first child's heartbeat
Monday, June 14th We break the news to our small group. They've all been praying for us since we had an early miscarriage the month before, so it was pretty exciting to tell everyone.
Thursday, June 17th Gillean and I fly home to Dallas for Allison and Blake's wedding. The plan: give both of our dads Grandfather's Day cards to break the news. My mom and dad picked us up from the airport, and considering we didn't want the car to crash, we patiently waited until we got home to tell them; however, we quickly realized that Allison was waiting for us when Emma greeted us at the back door. We weren't about to steal any of the bride's thunder, so we headed off to the Pearsons.
Pam, Gillean and I are sitting on the couch when Tommy gets home from work. Gill immediately busts out the Father's Day card, and he rips it open. "Hey, Grandpa? What, is this for Papa-O or something?" Tommy asks. Out of nowhere, we hear a scream come from Pam: "NOOOOOOOOO!" She physically leaps over me and hugs Gillean with the force only a first-time grandmother can exert. About 10 seconds later, after reading the full card, Tommy realizes what's happening. There is much rejoicing and "I knew it!!!"s from Pam.
After a delicious meal at Houston's later that night, Gillean and I head home to the Wade Family manor. I casually remember the Father's Day card, and run upstairs to get it. Paul is feigning excitement, although noticeably skeptical, likely expecting some kind of lame iTunes gift-card. He opens the card, takes one look at "Hi Granpa!" and...
I apparently have no concept of a reasonable announcement decibal level, as you can probably tell. But my dad was pretty proud of me, and told me so.
Suffice it to say, we were all pretty excited.
Friday, June 18th Ever since we arrived, Allison has been doing some undercover, private sleuthing. She's been picking up on subtle (only drinking water at dinner) and not-so-subtle (sending Stewart downstairs to make a video menu of pantry items) hints that Gillean could potentially be pregnant. But early that afternoon, the last straw landed on the camel's back. Gill decided it would be a good idea to eat Rice-a-Roni ... at 4:30 pm. There was no stopping Big Al - she let it be known that Gillean was indeed pregnant. And so we caved. As my dad pointed out, Aunt Allison is a bulldog. She won't stop until you admit it, so you might as well give in early. She was of course excited, and no thunder was stolen.
Saturday, June 19th At about 7:30 pm, Allison Wade officially became Allison Wade-Ezell. Ok ok, just Allison Ezell. It was a great wedding, and Gill actually felt pretty good most of the night. But of course, Aunt Judy and Uncle Jack had picked up the scent of pregnancy. Gillean? Not drinking?! Well, that is pretty common, but they knew something was up, so we couldn't wait until morning. We told them not to freak out, they reacted like someone just told them the weather, and we all toasted to Wadesy Baby.
And that brings us to today. Day 58. So for the next 222 days (and far beyond) we'll try our best to keep you updated about the life and times of Gillean, Stewart, Lady, and our beloved Wadesy Baby.
